Communications Specialist - Ann Arbor, MI
Position currently filled but still taking applications.

We are seeking a part-time Communications Specialist to create engaging research translation products for a federal government client.

Working Days: Monday - Friday
Hours per day: Flexible between 2 to 10 hours per day
Total Hours per Week: Flexible (not to exceed 40 hours per week)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, communications, informatics, or related field from an accredited school is required.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Acrobat
  • Professional, and InDesign) is desired.
  • Knowledge of social media applications (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr) is required
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Knowledge of and experience in creating PowerPoint slide presentations for a technical and non-technical audience is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in creating infographics is desired.
  • Knowledge of web design and html is desired.
  • Knowledge of photography and videography is desired.
  • Knowledge of R, Python, and/or ArcGIS or QGIS is desired.
  • Knowledge of creation of scientifically realistic animations using research data is desired.

TASKS

Science Writing
Interfaces with and coordinates with agency staff to write science translation content for the internet, internal and external newsletters, and social media campaigns. Interfaces with and coordinates with agency staff to layout and produce program documents, technical reports, and educational materials. 

Communications and Outreach Support
Drafting written content to reach external audiences on various platforms, such as websites, blogs, and social media
Building and maintaining strong working relationships and collaborating with staff at all levels.
Managing and maintaining the use of social media accounts for a government agency, business or nonprofit, that includes writing, editing and posting content on official social media accounts.
Engaging with the public by answering public inquiries and comments on social media.
Working with a variety of team members to develop social media messaging and content around agency themes.
Be able to travel to outreach locations as deemed necessary by the government technical representative, conforming to government travel regulations and requirements. The government will provide advance notice of travel, at a minimum 72 hours ahead of departure date. Travel will be arranged by the government, in the most economical means to the government. Estimated travel days during the period of performance is 10. 

Basic Web Design, Photography, Videography / Data Visualization/ Computer Graphics (desirable but not required)
Creates and updates touch screen displays, and/or data visualizations for public audiences that inform, engage, and entertain.
Explores new ways of displaying scientific data in 3D, both independently and in collaboration with researchers.
