DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES:
We are seeking an experienced Primary Care Registered Nurse (RN) to provide direct and indirect nursing care to Veterans at the Dayton VA Medical Center. The RN will work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team and assist with patient assessment, care planning, treatment, medication administration, documentation, patient education, and coordination of care.

Responsibilities:
  Obtain patient medical and family histories.

  Assess patients and develop appropriate nursing care plans.

  Document plans of care, treatments, and patient responses in the medical record.

  Carry out prescribed physician orders.

  Administer medications and IV therapies as appropriate.

  Assess and document patient responses to medications and treatments.

  Communicate pertinent patient information to physicians, charge nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

  Reassess patient conditions and modify nursing care plans when necessary.

  Interpret cardiac rhythms and recognize changes requiring intervention.

  Operate applicable clinical equipment, including EKG machines, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, and other emergency equipment.

  Recognize emergencies and initiate appropriate interventions and lifesaving measures.

  Participate in patient discharge planning.

  Provide patient and family education regarding medications, treatments, and diagnostic procedures.

  Coordinate with referring clinicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient care.

  Maintain accurate electronic health record documentation.

  Participate in team meetings, quality improvement activities, and required VA training.

  Maintain professional, courteous, and respectful interactions with Veterans, families, and staff.

REQUIRED AND DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Graduation from a professional nursing program approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE at the time the program was completed.

Current Ohio Registered Nurse license.

Current CPR certification through an American Heart Association vendor.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Current ACLS certification if assigned to a specialty clinic.

Minimum of one (1) year of direct patient care experience within the last three (3) years.

Ability to successfully complete applicable VA credentialing requirements.

Preferred:

  • Previous Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare experience.
  • Experience in Primary Care, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, Cardiac Monitoring, Emergency Room, or Intensive Care environments.

Schedule:
The hospital operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year including Federal Holidays. Primary Care: Normal clinic hours 0800-1630. Contractors shall be available to be scheduled to work during hours of 8am to 4:30 pm.

Clearance Level Required: Employment is contingent upon successfully completing any required background checks, in accordance with applicable law.
